Happy International Tour Guide Day 2026!

Every year on February 21st, people around the world come together to celebrate International Tourist Guide Day (ITGD)—a special occasion dedicated to honoring the hard work, expertise, and passion of professional tour guides. Established by the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (WFTGA), this day holds deep meaning: it commemorates the founding of the WFTGA and highlights the irreplaceable role of tour guides in global tourism and local communities.

Since the first International Tourist Guide Day in 1990, initiated under the leadership of WFTGA President Mrs. Titina Loizides with 15 participating countries, the event has grown into a worldwide movement. What began as a small observance has expanded year by year, now uniting guides, associations, and communities across countless nations. This global growth reflects just how essential tour guides are to the travel industry—and to the people they serve.

At its heart, ITGD is a celebration of the professional skills local tour guides bring to every destination. These skilled professionals do far more than show visitors around: they share history, culture, and hidden stories, turning a simple trip into an unforgettable experience. To showcase their talents and give back to the communities they represent, guide associations organize free tours and special events for local residents. These activities are open to everyone, including people with disabilities, disadvantaged groups, children, industry partners, government officials, and the general public.

Beyond free tours, the day also includes meaningful events for tour guides themselves, such as professional presentations, refresher training, and skill-improvement workshops. As a top-tier public relations event, International Tourist Guide Day successfully draws the attention of local authorities, citizens, and media to the high quality and real value of professional tour guiding. Many organizations join in to support the cause: coach companies provide free transportation, while attractions and museums open their doors at no cost. With each passing year, awareness increases, and regional and national governments continue to strengthen their support for this meaningful day.

Tour guides are widely recognized as the true ambassadors of their destinations. Whether welcoming guests arriving at airports, greeting cruise ship passengers, or leading city and nature tours, they are often the first point of contact for travelers. They include not only licensed tour guides but also taxi drivers, tour bus operators, and other on-the-ground professionals who connect visitors with local culture, history, and must-visit sites. They shape first impressions, create positive experiences, and help build a destination’s reputation worldwide.

On this special day, we recognize and commend tour guides everywhere for their essential services. They are an integral part of the tourism and hospitality industry, supporting local economies, preserving cultural heritage, and making travel accessible and enjoyable for all. Their dedication ensures that every visitor feels welcome, informed, and inspired.

To all tour guides around the globe: thank you for your knowledge, your enthusiasm, your professionalism, and your commitment to sharing the best of your communities. You are the storytellers, the hosts, the navigators, and the heart of travel.

Happy International Tourist Guide Day 2026!
